Description
Dr. Chandan Kumar completed his bachelor's degree (B-Tech) in Mechanical Engineering from the West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata and a master's degree (ME/M-Tech) from the Indian Institute of Engineering Science & Technology (IIEST) Shibpur (Formerly Known as Bengal Engineering and Science University Shibpur), West Bengal. He was awarded a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Guwahati, Assam, India. Additionally, he worked as a Post-Doctoral Fellow (Post-Doc.) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Delhi, India.
Dr. Chandan Kumar designed and fabricated a special type of workpiece fixture with a provision for supplying shielding gas effectively to inhibit the oxidation problem during laser beam welding of highly reactive materials such as Ti-6Al-4V alloy. During his Post-Doctoral tenure at IIT Delhi, he worked on Laser-Based Manufacturing, Laser Cladding & Coating, etc. He has extensive experience in material characterization using SEM, TEM, XRD, Optical Microscopy, and different Heat Treatment schedules, etc.

Prior to joining UPES Dehradun, Dr. Chandan Kumar served as an Assistant Professor at Joy University, Tamil Nadu and Lovely Professional University, Punjab. He worked as an Assistant Project Engineer on a DST-funded project at IIT Guwahati, Assam. He also has research and academic experience as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Delhi, India.

Dr. Chandan’s broader research area includes Laser Beam Welding, Additive Manufacturing, Laser Cladding & Coating, Laser Beam Machining, Laser-Based Manufacturing, Laser Bending, Arc Welding, Electron Beam Welding, Solid State Welding like Friction Stir Welding, Friction Welding, Hybrid Welding, Finite Element Modelling of Welding Processes, Surface Texturing, Advanced Manufacturing, Optimization in Manufacturing Processes, Material Science, Material Characterization, Heat Treatment Schedules, Powder Metallurgy, Application of Machine Learning in Manufacturing, etc. He is also open to collaborating with interdisciplinary research areas.

Fostering adept teaching skills can be accomplished through the adept utilization of three pivotal strategies: (i) motivating students (ii) providing effective learning environments (iii) providing opportunities for developing abilities to think.
Description
Dr. Chandan teaches a variety of courses like the theoretical and experimental study of advanced welding methods like Laser Welding, Electron Beam Welding, Micro-Plasma Arc Welding, Friction Stir Welding, and also the combination of different welding methods including numerical aspects as well. Numerical modelling of welding is intended to develop insight among students on the simulation of actual behaviour. Another course, Engineering Mechanics provides the building blocks of statics, dynamics, and the strength of materials. The problems of Engineering Mechanics are solved through the integrated application of mathematics, physics, and engineering principles.

Description
Dr. Chandan has published research articles in reputed international journals, four book chapters, and more than eight international conference papers in his area of research and has a good number of citations. Three of his book chapters were published by an international publisher i.e., Springer, and one book chapter was published by Elsevier. He is a reviewer for many reputed conferences as well as for the SCI/SCOPUS indexed journals such as International Journal of Precision Engineering and Manufacturing-Green Technology, Lasers in Manufacturing and Materials Processing, Journal of Engineering Manufacture, IMechE Part B, etc. He has delivered many invited lectures on laser welding and the weldability aspect of titanium alloy during faculty development programs, as well as short-term courses organized by IIT and Central University.
